Harun Or Rashid Dudu : There is a bright possibility of developing potato starch industry in the Garo Hills border on the border of Jhinaigati upazila of Sherpur district of the country. There is a huge demand for food grade and industrial grade starch at home and abroad. Farmers from potatoes will be able to cultivate potatoes and get self-reliant if the industry is formed in the region. Thousands of government and private land has fallen on Jhenyigati Garo hills and potatoes are cultivated during 90 to 100 days between two crops. Most of these lands fall if the potatoes are not cultivated. After cutting aman rice, potato is cultivated in sandy loam and poly clay. After cultivating potato, it is possible to cultivate Eri Boro again on the land. After the cultivation of potatoes, very little fertilizer application can be planted in the land and low-yielding of Irri-Boro paddy. Farmers said the yield of Eri paddy in these lands is also good. A potato starch industry official recently visited Ghazni tourism center in Jhenaigati and told the representative that a medium sized Potato Starch Industry can be set between 50 to 80 crores. One such industry is possible to produce more than 10 thousand metric tons of starch a year. There is a great demand for food grade starch made in the international market. The traveler told that the stork could be exported to Australia, Thailand and some other countries in Europe. According to the sources, more than the European machine letter, the production of industrial grade sticks by putting in the China Machine Letter area can reduce costs too much. Because the machines are more production, less cost, machine prices are lower. It is also known that the country has to import industrial grade starch of Tk 20 crore every year. After cutting of fallen land and aman paddy in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur district of the country, about 20 lakh hectares of land are left vacant, which is a farmer who is suitable for potato cultivation. Before the Irri-Boro rice cultivation, the cultivation of potatoes in these lands in 100 days is possible to produce millions of potato potatoes. A foreign economist expresses the hope that the country's food shortages will be completely fulfilled due to foreign currency coming from these potatoes, which can be exported abroad by exporting these potatoes. Farmers of Jhenaigati Garo Hills, on the border of Sherpur, cultivate potatoes every year and are more aggressive than their profit. Because when the potato becomes high then the buyer does not. They have to sell potatoes at the price of water. There is no provision in the garo hill areas due to lack of freezing. As a result, farmers do not get suitable price of potatoes. Farmers of the area said that if the cultivation of potatoes in 1 acre land, then 100 to 150 potatoes are found. Potato production costs, including potato, seeds, fertilizer, irrigation and labor wages, are increasing. Even then, if every pot of potato is sold at 200 rupees, it is beneficial to the farmers. The price of one hundred mind potatoes is 20 thousand taka. If a farmer cultivates potatoes in 5 acres of land, it can get Tk 1 lakh. The farmers expressed their regret that during the season there is no buyers of potatoes. That is why they do not cultivate potatoes. They have reduced potato cultivation since last 2-3 years. Apart from this, the farmers of this region could easily become self-reliant by cultivating potatoes in just 100 days. It is known that 1 kg of starch can be obtained from 6 kg of potatoes. In the international market, the price of 1 kg food grade starch is 50 to 60 taka. The cost of production of one kg of rice is Tk 32 to Tk 35. In addition to producing starch, by-products like animal and fish production are produced, the country has its own unique demand and market value. If the liberal industrialists of the country established the Starch Industry, the farmers of the country could become self-reliant only by producing potatoes and huge foreign currency coming to the country.
