Harun Or Rashid Dudu : Polythene bag has returned to the market again. The prohibited polythene has been spread across different hats in the district of Jhenaigati in Sherpur. From the sidewalk to the shopping mall, the polythene spread from the raw market to the hotel-restaurant. The use of polythene bags is strongly controlled if environmentalists are banned from using polythene in the face of strong objection. In these markets, fish, vegetables, and clothes and other things are going on in the polythene bag. Polythene was being used commercially in Bangladesh since 1982. On April 8, 2002, the government banned polythene bag production, marketing, use and transportation. After the ban, the operation and use of polythene was completely stopped due to the crackdown and strict enforcement of the law. This initiative was highly appreciated at that time to save the environment. But after the government withdrew from power in 2007, due to lack of adequate supervision and substandard bag, the banned polythene bag slowly began to return to the market. Due to the closure of anti-polythene operations and there is no application of law, different hats of Jhenyagati upazila have become polythene. An environmentalist said, "If it is not possible to stop the death of polythene, then the worst environmental disaster will come down." If it does not stop production and supply, it can not be resisted with mobile court. Above all, good future for public health and the next generation will be under threat. As an alternative, he urged the jute industry to increase the use of jute industry.
